LF - Can't do much better than perfect! - Straight to the bird

R - Ran right of the big cedar and drove the hill - came in around the back side of the gunners to get his bird

LF - Nice Flyer

R - Climbed the dam a bit and then drove on to the area of the fall - nice recovery.

LF - Out left of the cedars and straight to her bird

R - Ran the base of the dam - very wide left and deep of the guns - 1 big loop back there and then she cut right and found her bird.

Nemo and Lucas came to the line at 9:28 am

LF - Nemo entered the fall area under the arc of the bird - a quick left at the cedars and he was headed back with his bird.

R - His line took him deep behind the gunners where he set up a large area hunt before working his way right to grab his bird.

Thor and Michael came to the line at 9:23 am

LF - Nice line out - initial hunt was in the fall area of the previous shot but he worked it out and moved left to locate the bird

R - Very nice line to the bird - he held the line while traveling the steep incline of the dam and went straight to the bird

LF - Out to the area - quick work and got it

R - Out to the area and got her bird for a nice job!

LF - Out like a rocket! Goomba went down the hill and grabbed his pheasant

LF - Started early and he was called back - Sent and went right of the cedars out in front of the guns and then back to the bird.

R - Ran the base of the dam - angled up and straight to the bird.

Harp and Jordan came to the line at 8:44 am

LF - Big flyer! Harp went out right - fell in the grass but recovered - went right of the 2 cedars - hunted a large circle pattern - moved the pattern right and then came back left - worked it out and got his bird.

R - Got to the base and then went very wide left - saw the guns and stayed in front of them and went straight for the bird.

17. MY STAR OF HOPE, “Stella,” BLF, Dana Hoeper

Stella and Dana came to the line at 8:40 am

LF - Came in just right of the cedars - quickly found her bird

R - Base of the dam - went wide left and cut right at the trees - straight to her rooster!

14. RYAN’S MIGHTY CURVE, “Pitch,” BLM, Ronald Aronoff

Pitch and Ronald came to the line at 8:35 am

LF - Short bird - drove to arrive a little left of the fall area and missed it - hunted wide left and worked his way back - a little deep - and then on to the bird.

R - Deep on the dam - cut right just in front of the guns and drilled it!

Rev and Randy came to the line at 8:30 am

LF - Long flyer - he was out and took the right side of the 2 cedars - got a little deep - swept back and forth for a quick hunt and he got it

R - Base of the dam - wide left as soon as he caught sight of the guns he took a hard right and stayed in front of them - took a few turns and got it

Tori and Charlie came to the line at 8:26 am

LF - Out just left of the 2 cedars and straight to her hen

R - Nice angle along the dam - fell off and got wide left and deep of the guns - hunted a large loop and then worked the area in front of the guns to find her way back to the bird.

 Knox and Joe came to the line and had a No-Bird, they will be back after 6 running dogs

LF - Wide left going out to the trees - cut back right past the 2 cedars - back left and he got his bird.

R - Down the base of the dam -angled back up and stayed in front of the guns and went straight to the bird.

Spartacus and Robbie came to the line at 8:16 am

LF - Went out left of the 2 bushes - a quick right and he scooped it up

R - Out along the base - angled up and stayed in front of the guns and drilled it!

Beckett and Wade came to the line at 8:11 am

LF - Down to the valley and up to the area in front of the guns - started a hunt - worked wide and left almost to the tree line - hunted back and forth until she got it!

R - Out to the base of the dam - wide left of the guns and got very deep - came back to the front side of the guns - to the fall area and the bird.

Quinn and Reid came to the line at 8:07 am

LF - Out to the fall area just deep of the 2 cedars - a tight hunt and she quickly got her hen

R - Took an angle on the dam but fell off and ran to the area deep of the gunners - turned and went across to located her bird

LF - Down the hill and angled up on the other side - past the guns and straight to the fall area - hunted tight and he got it!

R - Ran the base of the dam - took part of the side and staying in front of the guns and got it!

1. DUCKPOND’S FOXXY LADY, “Lady,” BLF, Robbie Knutson

Lady and Robbie came to the line at 7:55 am

LF - Short bird - straight to the fall area and turned right and went directly to the hen flyer

R - Down the hill to the base of the dam - carried the line straight across - established a hunt deep left of the guns - worked her way over to the correct side and the bird.

Test Dogs - 7th Series

First test dog up for the 7th Series test was Cy and handler Robby Bickley ... Cy came to the line at 7:32 am

LF (Left Flyer) - Down the bowl to the big bush behind the flyer guns - started up towards the dead rooster station and was handled back to the flyer.

R (Right) - This is the bird Cy wanted to get from the start! He ran the base of the dam out to the area behind the gunners where he established a hunt - moved in front of the guns and got it! 

Livin Tha Dream’s Truth, “Tru,” BLF

Next test dog up was Tru with handler Don Fregelette.... Tru came to the line at 7:40 am

LF (Left Flyer) - 6 shots - I think they hit it but it was very wide left - dog had trouble finding this bird and the handler had to help

R (Right) - Ran the base of the dam - up into the fall area and straight to the bird.

This test is taking approximately 8 minutes per dog to complete.

7th Series Test Description

7th Series – Land Double with a Dead Rooster and a Hen Pheasant Flyer

The 7th Series was located at Dam Field. The mat sits high up on the South end of a field that is shaped like a bowl. The right side of this field is bordered by a steep dam. The dog will start high on the south end of the bowl and travel down the hill to then go left or right as it climbs up on the other side to retrieve their two birds.

Bird # 1 is a Dead Rooster that is thrown from left to right. The gunners are positioned just North of 2 small bushes. The bird lands about 270 yards on the high side of the North end of the bowl. The line to this bird takes the dog down a terraced hill, but the true line asks the dog to hold a line across a steep dam bank. Falling off or failing to stay high will put the dog behind the guns. (We will refer to this mark as R for Right)

Bird # 2 is a Hen Pheasant Flyer. The gunners for this bird are positioned directly in front of the mat throwing left and then shooting the bird. The bird will land on the left side of the bowl as it is rising back up at approximately 220 yards from the mat. This bird is shot right to left. The dog will go down the hill and start back up on the other side to reach the fall area where the bird will land near 2 cedar bushes. (We will refer to this mark as LF for Left Flyer)

This test is taking approximately 3-5 minutes per dog to complete.

Good Morning - Day 4

Good Morning Everyone and Welcome to the 4th Day of the National Derby Championship! 

This morning we are kicking off 7th series of this National. Our test dogs are getting ready to go as I type and we will begin with our first running dog soon.

The morning has started out with partly cloudy skies and cool temps around 54 degrees. The high today is expected to be around 78 degrees, with mostly sunny skies and little to no wind. As usual, we will report any changing conditions as the day goes on!

For now, stay tuned as we begin the 7th Series of the National Derby!

Today we have 29 Dogs called back to the 7th series and we will be starting with dog #1
