2nd Series Test Description

2nd Series – Land and Water Double

For this series we are at Terrace Field. The mat is on a mound facing NW.

Bird # 1 is a Drake thrown right to left landing approximately 240 yards from the line. From the mat, the dog goes over several terraces and mounds before entering a piece of water. Past the water there are 2 large cedar bushes on the right. The gunners sit just left of the bushes and throw left angle back. (We will refer to this mark as L for Left)

Bird # 2 is a Drake. These gunners are sitting on the top ridge of a bowl and are on the handlers right. They throw the Drake to the left with the bird landing over the top of the ridge at 170 yards. The line to this bird takes the dog off the mound across the field up and down over several terraces and over the ridge. (We will refer to this mark as R for Right)

This test is taking approximately 3-5 minutes per dog to complete.

My dog showed the drive to compete so wanted to give her every opportunity to succeed.

Who are your training partners at home?

My children as well as Glennon McCreery with Northwind Retrievers.

What is the origin of your dog's name?

While Luna is a popular female lab name I was more focused on her AKC name. Shortly after taking her home she fell very ill and per the vet she would grow out of it around 12 months. Throughout that time she showed amazing resilience. That said, found it fitting to include in her AKC name.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog ...

Tying in with the origin of her name, Luna's sickness was that of HOD. For the first 12 months of her life she was only able to train about 1 week per month. When she wasn't training she was essentially bedridden and on pain meds. From nearly having to put her down 3+ times to having a Derby champion this fall has been a whirlwind of emotions. Although she's a long shot in the Nationals, I wanted to at least give her a shot at what she was bred to do.

What Made you decide to compete in Field Trials?

My interest started when I got a lab to hunt with  back in 2012. I was introduced to hunt tests and that quickly evolved into wanting to learn more about field trials. My competitive nature led me to wanting to see if I could get a dog to the highest level.

Who are your training partners at home?

Most days, it's just my wife and me training at our house. I run the dogs and she throws the birds. I also do a good bit of training with Caleb Nall, Rooney's trainer.

What is the origin of your dog's name?

Rooney is a family name we came across and really liked. However, when we were picking a puppy from the litter, she was wearing the pink checkered collar and referred to as "Checkers" We initially had another registered name we were leaning towards, but we couldn't let go of her first "name" and wanted to find a way to incorporate it. "Checkaroo" seemed to check all of those boxes.

Tell us an interesting story about your dog ...

Like most labs, Rooney was born with a curious streak and a talent for trouble. As a puppy, she treated our house like her own puzzle game, quickly mastering the art of breaking into anything we touched often: the trash can, the dishwasher, the pantry - you name it. We assumed once she went to training, she would come home having lost interest for her puppy games. We thought wrong. After five or six months away, she bounded through the door for a home visit and, without missing a beat, trotted straight by to the kitchen and pulled open the trash can like she'd never left. We do not have any small children in the house; however, we find ourselves "toddler proofing" areas for Rooney and her never ending quest for adventure.
